Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood members celebrated Hanukkah by assembling and wrapping 40 packages filled with ground coffee, tea, hot cocoa, scarfs and gloves and bringing them to the Mid Island Y in Plainview. Each package will be hand-delivered by a social worker to those living at or below the poverty line. “Gail Warrack, the director of the food pantry at the Y, had tears in her eyes when we delivered the packages,” said Cindy Feldman, Sisterhood president. “They were tears of gratitude.”
Sisterhood donated items to the pantry earlier this fall to support UJA-Federation’s Fourth Week, a women’s philanthropy initiative to help people who receive supplemental nutritional benefits from the government get through the last week of the month. By the fourth week, many have already used up their funds.
Helene Lurie, who is a chair of Fourth Week, coordinated the project, aptly named “Wrap a Winter Hug – Make a Miracle Happen!” The Sisterhood is affiliated with Women’s League for Conservative Judaism and welcomes membership inquiries from women in the community. Meetings are held at Temple Beth Sholom in Roslyn Heights.
