Tennis Squad Undefeated

Roslyn]The weather is finally cooperating and spring sports at Roslyn High School is in full swing with one team off to a particularly fast start.

The boys’ tennis team sports a 2-0 record. The Bulldogs started the season with a 5-2 win over Garden City. In singles competition, Michael Liebman won his match, while in doubles play, Simon Adler and Eric Irom combined to defeat their Garden City opponents in straight sets.

On March 30, the doubles team of Chase Goldberg and Ben Tenner took a straight set win from their Great Neck North opponents to clinch another win for Roslyn.

In other winning action, the girls’ softball team started off the month of April with a bang, defeating Manhasset in an 12-11 slugfest. Kate Kozuch and Megha Schmalzle had the big hits in a 10-run fourth inning that gave Roslyn a lead they would never relinquish. The Lady Bulldogs are now 1-1.

Few spring sports, including baseball, have become as popular as lacrosse. On Saturday, March 28, the girls’ lacrosse top notched a big win over Carey, 8-2. The powerhouse quartet of Callie Migden, Samantha Busch, Reilly Liotta and Molli Spencer accounted for all eight points. Migden had three goals, Liotta and Spencer had two each, with Busch had both a goal and an assist. Reilly’s sister, Mackenzie Liotta had an impressive nine saves in the goalie box.

On April 1, the boys’ lacrosse team scored their own high-flying win with a tight 7-6 victory over Glen Cove. Three goals in the third quarter broke open a tie game, as Roslyn’s defense held off a fourth quarter surge by Glen Cove. The Bulldogs’ attack was well-rounded, with Jordan Hurwitz, Jordan Steinfast and Zach Simon accounting for three points and Michael Rapone adding two points. All three of Steinfast’s points came on goals, while both of Rapone’s points came on assists. Griffin Goldberg played his usual stellar game in the goal, recording five saves.

There are plenty of opportunities for Roslyn boosters to cheer on the local teams this week.

On Tuesday, April 14, the boys’ tennis team hopes to remain undefeated in a 4:30 p.m. away game against Friends Academy. On Saturday, April 18, the Bulldogs will entertain Syosset in a 10 a.m. home game.

The boys’ lacrosse team will play a Thursday, April 9, 10 a.m. home game against Hempstead. Two days later, on April 11, they will play an 11 a.m. away game against Fairfield Warde.

The girls’ lacrosse team will play two home games in the coming week. On Thursday, April 16, they will host Clark for a 4:45 p.m. match. Two days later, Roslyn will host Glen Cove for a 10 a.m. home contest.

In baseball action, the Bulldogs will play a Monday, April 13 home game against South Side, with first pitch at 4:30 p.m. The next day, they will travel to South Side for a 4:30 p.m. game.
