Roslyn resident Tyler Hu won the Spelling Bee at The Green Vale School held earlier this month. His winning word, courtier, put him in first place ahead of fourth grade student Jack Jervis who narrowly missed spelling monochrome.
Hu will represent Green Vale at the countywide competition held at Hofstra University on Feb. 9. The winner of that will move one step closer to the final round of the National Spelling Bee, sponsored by the E. W. Scripps Company, held in May.
Fifteen finalists competed at Green Vale after winning semi-finals in each fourth and fifth grade homeroom and in sixth through eighth grade English classes. The judges were faculty members Jessica Greif, Valerie Field, Janice Van Lith and Tyler Wood.
