On Thursday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m., Michal Smart will speak at Temple Sinai of Roslyn. Smart will discuss her prize-winning book, Kaddish: Women’s Voices of Today.
The talk is being held in cooperation with the Sid Jacobson JCC and the Jewish Book Council and the Rosh Chodesh Women’s Group, which is part of Temple Sinai’s Friend of a Friend Chaverot.
Winner of the 2013 National Jewish Book Award, Kaddish: Women’s Voices reveals what the recitation of Kaddish has meant to different women from across the globe. A diverse group of 52 contributors detail their relationships with the family members they lost and explore for the reader what particular challenges women face as they engage in the traditional mourning ritual. Through honest and personal essays, the book invites the reader into the intimate experience of women in mourning seen through the prism of Kaddish. The collection considers what it means for women to heal from loss, to be strengthened by memory and to find comfort and purpose for themselves and their families within the framework of Jewish tradition.
There will be a discussion and book signing. Books are available for purchase in the Temple office for $25. The entire community is welcome to attend. There is no charge. RSVP to foftemplesinai@gmail.com.
