Harbor Hill students were treated to a visit from some special guests last month: New York Islanders stars Kyle Okposo, Taylor Beck and Nikolay Kulemin. In addition to giving a thrill to the students (and many of the staff), they brought a serious message about academics and teamwork.
One morning each fall is “NY Islanders School Day,” when the entire Islanders team heads out to a select few Long Island elementary schools to talk with students about the importance of reading, working hard and staying in school. The team’s aim is to show children that these are the most fundamental building blocks in life regardless of what career path students ultimately choose to follow. The three players who visited Harbor Hill also emphasized the importance of teamwork, supporting one another and the harm that comes from bullying.
Harbor Hill was nominated and selected for this honor based on the school’s efforts to demonstrate strong character through their Bucket Filling, The Promise, Peace Paws and Peaceful School Bus programs, as well as their school’s teamwork and commitment to the gift of giving through toy drives, coat drives, book drives, food drives and other acts of generosity.
