blizzardA blizzard warning for Nassau and Suffolk counties has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for Thursday evening through Friday afternoon.

Gov. Cuomo announced Thursday that Long Island Expressway will close at midnight Thursday in both directions until 5 a.m. Friday.

Heavy snow, strong winds and dangerously cold wind chills are expected along with snow accumulations of 8 to 10 inches for the Roslyn area.

The heaviest snow and the strongest winds will occur Thursday night into Friday, according to the NWS, when blowing and drifting snow will produce dangerous travel conditions.

Dangerously cold wind chills are also expected during this time with temperatures dropping into the lower teens Thursday night through Friday afternoon and wind chills of 5 to 10 below zero.

The NWS advises residents not to travel during blizzard conditions, but if you must, to have a winter survival kit with you and to never leave your car if you get stranded.

In a media phone conference Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the Long Island Expressway and all state parkways could be shut down before the evening rush hour on Thursday.

The blizzard warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Thursday to 1 p.m. Friday.

Things clear up Friday night with a low temperature of 7 degrees and on Saturday the sun comes out raising temperatures to around 27 degrees.
