A Zumba Toning (using light handheld weights) class will be held at the Jewish Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, April 14, 16, 212 and 23 at 7 p.m. All classes are $10 per session and are held in the lower level auditorium. Debby Snider also teaches these classes.
Adult Education Classes
On Monday, April 13, 20 and 27 at 10:30 a.m., Rabbi Cohen’s adult education class will be held in the breakfast room. He will teach Rabbi Judah Halevi’s timeless classic, The Kuzari. This book influenced authors for centuries and created a framework for understanding Jewish beliefs that retains its relevance.
On Tuesday, April 14, 21 and 28 at 7 p.m., rabbinic intern Mitchell Berkowitz will hold his class, also in the breakfast room. He will lead a class in Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto’s book, The Path of the Righteous. Written in 1740, this book is the foundation work of modern Jewish ethics, the foundational work upon which all subsequent Jewish ethical literature rests.
On Wednesday, April 15, 22 and 29 at 7 p.m., Cantor Ben Matis will hold another class in the breakfast room. He will teach a class in Jewish world music, comparing the musical traditions of Jewish communities the world over and attempting to understand the specific contribution each makes to the larger world of Jewish music.
Finally, on Friday, April 17 and 24 at 7:30 a.m., Rabbi Cohen’s second adult education class will be a reading of Rabbi Abraham Heschel’s Man Is Not Alone and God In Search of Man. These books form the basis of Heschel’s theology. When read together, they create a context for thinking about Judaism that is spiritually rich as it is intellectually rigorous.
